The Swain Pain Center has been operating in Bryson City for more than a decade. The physician and staff of the pain center care for a number of chronic conditions, such as neck and back pain, headaches and migraines, fibromyalgia, cancer pain, diabetic and joint pain, arthritis, neuropathic pain, sciatica and injuries sustained at work. They provide comprehensive care including medication management, interventional procedures, pain pump and spinal cord stimulator implant and management  and psychological support.

About your Provider: 

Jacob Mills, M.D.

The Swain Pain Center is staffed by Jacob Mills, M.D. who will see patients in the office by physician referral. Dr. Mills completed a fellowship in pain medicine at Emory University School of Medicine following a residency in anesthesiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham where he received the J. Antonio Aldrete Award in Pain Medicine. Dr. Mills received his medical degree from Mercer University School of Medicine and is board certified in anesthesiology and in pain medicine. Prior to beginning medical school, Dr. Mills worked as a pharmacist, having completed the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program at the University of Georgia where he received the Robert C. Wilson Award.

“Dr. Mills brings solid clinical experience to our pain center, having completed extensive training in pain medicine and anesthesiology following years of employment as a pharmacist,” said Steve Heatherly, CEO of Harris Regional Hospital and Swain Community Hospital. “It has been our tradition for more than 10 years to serve the region with comprehensive pain services at our location in Bryson City and we are excited to continue that service with Dr. Mills.”

Insurance Policies - We participate with most insurance plans, but it is your responsibility to call your insurance carrier to determine whether or not we are included in your particular plan.  Also, if your plan requires a referral from your primary care physician for specialist office visits, you are responsible for obtaining this referral.  As a courtesy to our patients, we submit claims to all insurance companies provided we have complete and accurate information.  Any co-payments are due at the time of service.

 If you are unable to keep your appointment, please call our office at least 24 hours in advance so that we may use that time for another patient.

Telephone Calls - Except in emergencies, our providers do not accept calls during office hours.  Our office staff is experienced and able to answer most questions and are happy to relay your message to the providers.
